Joining Interfraternity Council

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is one of the four councils within The University of Alabama’s Fraternity and Sorority Life community. Membership in an IFC fraternity offers students a chance to:

  • build lifelong friendships
  • develop valuable skills
  • create a sense of belonging within a large university community.

Each chapter provides a unique experience, but all are grounded in shared values that promote integrity, scholarship, and service. The IFC experience supports personal growth and connection, helping members thrive during their time at the Capstone and beyond.

New Member Requirements

Potential New Members of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) must register for recruitment.

Recruitment Process

IFC offers a rolling bidding process, and fraternities may give out bids for membership during the spring and summer months before the start of classes in the fall. The IFC also holds Open Recruitment Week as students move in for the fall. During this week, prospective members can interact with individuals from each fraternity. A small group of chapters will also recruit new members in the spring. Visit the IFC website for more on the Recruitment process.

Maximizing Your Opportunity

The following are ways to increase the likelihood that you will be offered membership in an IFC organization.

Recruitment Registration

Potential New Members (PNMs) interested in joining an Interfraternity Council (IFC) Fraternity must register for IFC recruitment with Campus Director (opens early April).

IFC fraternities will be tabling at Bama Bound at various dates in late June and July. It is very important that you reach out to the recruitment chair for the chapter(s) you are interested in over the summer.

Recruitment Guide

Review the IFC Recruitment site to learn more about the IFC Executive Council, IFC fraternities and their history at UA, important recruitment dates, and chapter-specific information.

Receiving a Bid from an IFC Chapter

When receiving a bid, PNMs can accept, deny, or place their bid on hold. Verbally accepting a bid tells the fraternity you have accepted the invitation to join their fraternity and go through their new member education process. Denying a bid tells the fraternity you are not interested and will be exploring other fraternities. Placing a bid on hold tells the fraternity that you are interested but keeping an open mind. Men who receive a bid will officially accept it through Campus Director at IFC New Member Convocation in August.
