A Brief History
The University of Alabama has a rich history of fraternity and sorority life. Here is a quick look down memory lane.
1831
First students enrolled at UA.
1847
The Psi chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon is chartered at UA and is the University’s first fraternity.
1856
The founding chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is established.
1904
The Zeta chapter of Kappa Delta is the University’s women’s sorority, the first in the state of Alabama, and is the oldest continuous chapter of KD.
1922
The Mu chapter of Theta Tau is chartered as the first co-ed professional engineering organization at UA, now a part of the United Greek Council.
1974
The Eta Chi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is chartered as the first NPHC organization at UA.
2009
The United Greek Council was established.
2015
The University surpassed 10,000 students in the fraternity and sorority community.
2024
UA opened Greek Assembly Hall and commemorated 50 years of NPHC organizations on campus with the NPHC Plaza.
